Evelina Melbarzde

It is probably because my everyday life is quite hectic and because I’m surrounded by a world full of ambition, competition, dynamism and anxiety that an urge for balance drives me to search for simplicity and tranquility. I go to remote areas to find some “bandages” of peace, modesty and serenity to heal my world. I have not found a perfect place, a perfect world, but my search keeps me in shape. The photographs exhibited are “bandages” I brought back with me from Cambodia, Uganda and Peru earlier this year.

I find it challenging to capture images of people that reflect their true selves and not just an impression of how they would like others to picture them. Fascinated by a combination of modesty and pride, I feel privileged when people don’t pose for me as I consider that as a sign of their self-assurance.  It is with deep respect that I observe people who don’t need to hide away to submerge in their thoughts, their dream world. I try to guess what they are contemplating, but what I really wish to understand is how they gained that serenity. This sometimes difficult life seems easy and light to them. Observing them is like getting close to magic and I'm very happy when I manage to capture one of those magic moments. It inspires me to become a better person.
